I had a Client contact me late last week asking for a cake for her girlfriend's 40th Birthday. She sent me a picture of what she was looking for and asked if I could replicate it. It was a very pretty cake, complete with lots of "bling" but it looked like something I could create, so I accepted.
Now if you look back in all of my previous cakes, it has been a while since I had done a two tiered cake, let alone something covered in Fondant, so I was nervous about how this would work out. I bought my fondant, as I didn't have time to try and make it on my own, and plus I needed a lot of black, and well, I am never attempting to dye black fondant:) Anyways, I bought the Duff Goldman Fondant in black to use for the first time. I had had many students in my class use it before so I knew it was a little on the softer side, but I had no idea just how soft it was until I started working with it. Honestly, not my favorite fondant medium to work with. I imagine it would be great for covering a cake in, but for doing detailed work and cutouts, I honestly don't recommend it. Most of my diamond shapes I had to resculpt after I cut because it was so soft trying to get it off the board.
Anyways, I started off with a huge mass of Hot Pink Fondant..
I had to color this myself, and it took me about 45 minutes kneading it to get the color right. Needless to say I wouldn't recommend doing this a few days before a wedding, as my hands are now nicely colored hot pink:)
Once the fondant was colored, I had to covered my cake..
Yeah, I know, my pics suck big time:)
So once the tiers were done, now the fun part.. actually adding the decorations to the cake. I managed to get a good chunk of work done while my kids napped. For once they cooperated and slept/played quietly for about 1.5 hours.. Enough time to get a few things done at least.
Soon after, my bottom tier was in progress.
And then after a few more hours of time alone at night with no distractions, I was able to complete to "masterpiece".
I must admit, I was pretty pleased with how it turned out. (Again, the pic is crap... Maybe one day I'll get a good one). The Tiara is full sized and wearable, there is a pink ring in the center and the tiers are "blinged up" with Pink necklaces. A little something for the Birthday Girl to wear for her night out:)
Considering how little time I had to actually work on this, and the rustiness of my working with fondant, I was pretty impressed with what I created.. Now to hope my client is thrilled with the results:)
This is a blog about my foray into cake decorating. I started off by taking the classes, and now I teach them! I also do cakes on the side for hire.

Happy (Belated) Father's Day
So I am a little behind on my posting this week. Been busy in cake land here!
Sunday was Father's Day and while my Hubby does not care for sweets, some Father's do! A friend of mine asked me to make her these adorable Hamburger Cupcakes she saw online and wanted to know if I could make them. Of course I had seen the same thing from Bakerella last year around this time. I had it bookmarked as something I wanted to try one day, so i was glad when she asked me for these.
Honestly, they are dead easy to make. Bakerella does a wonderful job explaining all of the details, so I won't regurgitate her idea, but here are my final products:
Cute, are they not??:)
I tell you... DEAD EASY to make:)
Go for it, I know you want to!!
